Running legend debuts all-new race format this month

A new sport is making its debut on Sunday, Dec. 23, in Pleasanton, Calif., with the first-ever staging on American soil of a unique new running competition called the Double Road Race™ (or Double for short).

A distance race consisting of two legs — an opening 10K (6.2 miles) leg, followed by a 5K (3.1 miles) leg, with a short break in between and winners to be decided on best aggregate time — the Double is the brainchild of running visionary and innovator Bob Anderson, founder and former publisher of Runner’s World magazine and an avid runner for 50 years.

“It’s not two races in one day; it’s one race with two legs,” says Anderson in describing his creation. “This is the only running event with a halftime.”

After completing the 10K leg, runners can go to an area designated as the Recovery Zone, where they will be provided with hydration, massage, nutrition and advice to help them recover and prepare for the second leg.

For runners not quite ready to “Do the Double,” there’s also a Christmas 5k and Kids One Mile race to round out the fun, festive family event.

Proceeds from the Double Road race will go to non-profit youth running programs in Pleasanton, as well as the national Youth running program Just Run. Just Run is a free, multifaceted youth fitness program developed by the Big Sur International Marathon that not only promotes physical activity and the sport of running but also good citizenship, healthy eating and pride in accomplishment.

“My two kids grew up with running. It was something we just always did. Our weekly Fun Run program we held at Foothill College was how we spent Sunday mornings. We didn’t charge any entry fees and the program was held for over 20 years. Lisa is 40 years old and she loves running now just as much as ever. It starts with the kids. We are supporting programs we feel will encourage kids to start running. 100% of your donations will be used on kids running programs,” says life-long runner and race director Anderson.
