Running injuries: Stress fracture treatment

Stress fractures are notoriously difficult to treat because they heal slowly, and most runners don't have the patience to stop running until they heal completely. However, there are a few proven stress fracture treatments that you should follow to heal as quickly as possible.

1. Rest. No runner likes to hear it, but the best stress fracture treatment is rest. According to Tim Noakes, the author of Lore of Running, stress fractures of the foot require at least six weeks to heal. Stress fractures of the tibia and femur need at least eight to 10 weeks to heal, and pelvic stress fractures may take up to 16 weeks before they are fully healed. During this time, you'll have to refrain from running and do only activities approved by your doctor.

2. Air casts. Your doctor may recommend an air cast, although that will depend on the location and severity of your stress fracture. Some studies have shown that runners who use an air cast for several weeks heal more quickly than those who don't. Your doctor may also put you on crutches for a short time.

3. RICE. RICE is a common treatment used for running injuries, and it stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. Since you are probably already resting to recover from your stress fracture, don't neglect ice and compression as a way to reduce pain and swelling. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons also recommends elevating the injured area, and your doctor may prescribe NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) to reduce inflammation.

4. Cross-training. Once your doctor approves it, cross-training can help maintain your fitness while you undergo stress fracture treatment. Many experts recommend pool running as a great way to train while injured. Cycling, swimming and elliptical training can be useful cross-training exercises, but check with your doctor to see if it is appropriate for your specific stress fracture.

Don't neglect your emotional well-being while you are treating your stress fracture. Injuries can be difficult for any runner, but running forums and support groups can help you maintain your sanity while you take time off to heal. Not sure if you have a stress fracture?
