If your goals for 2014 include getting fit, you may want to consider running. Lynchburg is a runner friendly community with many great trails for training.
The Lynchburg Road Runners Club has helped runners in Lynchburg enjoy the sport of running for more than 30 years.
Here are some local running events and clinics to look forward to in 2014. You can register online for most events at the Riverside Runners website.
Trail runners, it's not too late to register for the Arctic 5k Trail Race, "Ice, Sweat & Tears" at 9:00 a.m. on Jan. 25 at Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre.
This event is part of the Liberty Mountain Trail Series, which includes the Liberty Mountain 5k Trail Race on Feb. 15 and the Bald Mountain 10k on April 26.
The Lynchburg Road Runners 2014 Race Series consists of these six events:
- Point of Honor 5K & Youth Mini-Mile on April 5
- Spring into Spring 4 Miler on April 26
- Memorial Day 10K Run & 2 Mile Walk on May 26
- Presbyterian Homes & Family Services and Family Alliance 5K and Youth Run on June 21
- Percival's Island 5-Miler on July 19
- Lynchburg Half Marathon and 5K on Aug. 9
Three upcoming events will help you prepare for the Lynchburg Road Runners Race Series.
The 4th Annual Boys & Girls Club Resolution Run and 2 Mile Run/Walk will be held on Feb. 1 in downtown Lynchburg.
Many local runners enjoy participating in the Goode What Goes Down Must Come Up 4-Miler. This predict your time event will be held on March 8 in Goode.
The 7th Annual Gifts for Gulu 5K & Children's Runs will be held March 29 at Lynchburg College's track. This event has been part of the Lynchburg Road Runners Race Series in previous years, but is a stand-alone event this year.
Many area runners enjoy fun runs as a part of their running program. Riverside Runners and The Aid Station post notifications about sponsored fun runs on their Facebook pages.
The Lynchburg Road Runners Club also sponsors fun runs throughout the year. Club members note planned group runs on the club's Facebook page too.
Distance trail runners have been training for the Holiday Lake 50k Trail Run, which begins at 6:30 a.m. on Feb. 15 at Holiday Lake in Appomattox.
This event is part of the six-race Beast Series which also includes:
- Terrapin Mountain 50k & Half Marathon on March 22 in Sedalia
- Promise Land 50k on April 26 in Bedford
- Grindstone 100 on Oct. 3-5 in Staunton
- Mountain Masochist Trail Run on Nov. 1 in Lynchburg
- Hellgate 100 on Dec. 13 in Fincastle
Runners, cyclists and swimmers are preparing for the 12th Annual Angels Race Triathlon, which will be held in downtown Lynchburg on Sunday, April 27.
Elementary and middle school girls in many local schools participate in the Girls on the Run of Central Virginia program, which trains girls to run a 5K race, while building self-confidence. Girls on the Run 5K events are scheduled for May 10 and Nov. 22 at Sweet Briar College.
At many local races, you will find assisted athlete teams from United Athletics Lynchburg. United Athletics pairs local athletes with individuals who require physical assistance to participate in running, swimming, biking and triathlon events.
Lynchburg's own Virginia 10 Miler is scheduled for Sept. 27 at E.C. Glass High School. This annual event, which includes the 10 Miler, 4 Mile Run and 4 Mile Walk, draws world class runners from around the globe.
The Amazing Mile Children's Run will be held on Sept. 26 in downtown Lynchburg. This event features a series of runs for children of all ages.
Rehab Associates of Central Virginia holds free injury clinics at The Aid Station on the first Saturday of each month and at Riverside Runners on the third Saturday of each month. Both clinics are held from 10 a.m. to noon.
The calendar is loaded with running events in the Lynchburg area. Join the Lynchburg Road Runners to enjoy the camaraderie of fellow runners and register now for upcoming events.
