Runnin for Rhett is having one of their most successful training seasons. This year they will prepare over 150 local runners for the Shamrock'n Half Marathon on Sunday, March 14, 2010.
Founders Randy and Beth Seevers started the Runnin for Rhett non-profit foundation and training program in 2007. Their goal is to inspire and motivate others, and encourage them to "move into life".
Randy and Beth are empowered by memories of their son, the program's namesake, Rhett Seevers. Rhett passed away at age seven from complications related to cerebral palsy.
Although Rhett only lived a few short years, had severe limitations, and could not walk himself, he inspired others with his laugh and infectious smile.
Beth Seevers, Rhett's Mom, ran her first marathon on the first anniversary of Rhett's passing. She realized that the lessons she learned from Rhett gave her strength and motivated her though the marathon experience. The Runnin for Rhett Program was developed to let Rhett's story inspire those who feel defeated, to uplift those who feel down and encourage people to take that first step and "MOVE INTO LIFE."
The Runnin for Rhett training program not only trains local runners, but also raises money for Scholarships for Sacramento County students and other serves. This year's goals include:
- Two $5,000 scholarships to college students that are continuing on to get their Special Ed teaching credentials.
- Grants to two elementary schools in Sacramento, one in the Natomas School District (Two Rivers Elementary) and one in the Elk Grove School District (Butler Elementary).
- A 4-week nutritional and fitness program for 50 students at each school to fight childhood obesity.
The Runnin for Rhett 9-week Shamrock'n training program started on January 9, 2010. They meet twice a week which includes Tuesdays (at different locations), and Saturday's (on the American River Bike Trail). They also will be providing over 350 volunteers for the Shamrock'n Half Marathon race.
For more info: Randy and Beth Seevers are very passionate about their program, and encourage the public to contact them. They are also recruiting volunteers to work at the Shamrock'n Half Marathon. They can be reached through their website at Runnin for Rhett or by email at info@runninforrhett.com.
