Runners to get on board the Snowball Express

On Sunday, February 23, 2014 runners and walkers will meet at Johnny Mac’s House of Spirits located at 208 Main Street in Asbury Park, N.J. They will check in for a unique run hosted by the Jersey Shore Running Club along the Jersey Shore. Many will be dressed for the occasion at the Train Run – Snowball Express.

Sunday, February 23, 10:58 a.m. 1,3,4 or 6 miles, Winter Train Run Snowball Express, Asbury Park, N.J.

This will be the third year of the winter train run with one in the fall and another in the winter. According to Vicki Hoagland one of the organizers “The train runs have been so much fun that there were requests to hold two of these one in the fall and the other toward the end of winter. And since it is for a great cause Johnny Mac’s House of Spirits agreed to host us again.”

Last winter’s event took the runners north into Long Branch. This time the group will head south and be able to run on the newly reconstructed boardwalks of Spring Lake, Avon, Bradley Beach, Ocean Grove and Asbury Park..

After checking in at Johnny Mac’s, the participants will walk across the street to the Asbury Park train station and catch the 10:58 a.m. train going south toward Bay Head.

Runners will be given the option of running or walking anywhere from 1 to 8 miles.

Official “snowball” runners will provide direction along the course and escort the participants back to Johnny Mac’s.

The first stop will let the first group of runners and walkers off in Bradley Beach where they will have a choice of routes. Either head east to the ocean front boardwalk make their way along the Bradley Beach Promenade thence into Ocean Grove and through the old Casino building into Asbury Park and then head west along the Wesley Lake back to Main Street and Johnny Mac’s a distance of 2.6 miles or head north on Main Street directly back to Johnny Mac’s which is a distance of almost exactly 1 mile.. The second stop will be at the Belmar train station where runners will get off and head east to the Belmar Boardwalk and head north over the bridge into Avon along the boardwalk there into Bradley Beach and the promenade there and then into Ocean Grove past the Great Auditorium on the boardwalk and through the Casino building and head west along Wesley Lake back to Johnny Mac’s which is a distance of about 4.5 miles. The final stop will take runners into Spring Lake where they will get off and run east to the boardwalk there and then into Belmar and follow the route as above for a total distance of 6.5 miles. Map of Spring Lake to Johnny Mac’s route.

Runners can add an additional mile at their option by running to Asbury Park Convention hall and then head back toward the Casino building and then head west back to Johnny Mac’s.

Upon their return at Johnny Mac’s the participants will be treated to a Pizza, Omelets, Beer (or soda) and a party. There will be lots of random awards and giveaways. All per-registered participants will get a quality event shirt.

Special awards will be presented to the best costumes at the party.

So let it snow, the train will get you to the start on time and a great party will await you at Johnny Mac's House of Spirits after your run..

The event is a benefit for the Jersey Shore Running Club’s Asbury Park Youth Program and the Mount Carmel School in Asbury Park.

According to Vicki Hoagland of Allenhurst, NJ one of the organizers of the event this will be a fun event and will help supports a worthwhile cause.
