At 8:30 a.m. the thermometer at Fourth and A Streets read 29 degrees. This didn't dampen spirits and both walkers and runners took part in a 5k fun run around the streets of San Rafael.

Melissa LaBonge of the Arthritis Foundation in Northern California said the event beat last year's figures. "We raised over $15,000 so far, $5,000 of which was raised yesterday (Sunday)," LaBonge said.

Later this week LaBonge said that they've so far raised $15,000 more than last year but fundraising continues until the end of the year.

A possible reason for the larger participation was moving the event from the Marin County Civic Center to downtown San Rafael. The event will be back in 2014 and should be as much or more of a success.
