Runners bear down in 5K race

Proving that not all bears remain in hibernation during winter, 163 runners took part in the Hesse Bear 5K Stomp Feb. 15 in Savannah.

Geoff Riell, 35, paced the field in 19:42, followed by Garrett Campbell, 15, in 20:22, and offering proof not to mess with a mother bear, Emmy Williams, 27, in third in 20:34. David Harding was third among the men and fourth overall in 20:35.

Lori Hunter, 32, was second among the women and seventh overall with a time of 22:15. Finishing 30 seconds behind her in eighth place was Natalie Shaw, 24. Emily Vogeler, 31, was the fourth fastest woman and 15th overall, finishing in 23:27.

Stan Dodson, 45, led the masters field with a time of 20:59, good for fifth overall, while Melissa Bowen, 41, took top honors on the women's side in 24:39.
