RuneScape player owned ports: Viable alternatives to speed crewmen

RuneScape players have the option to hire speed based crew in player owned ports. This RuneScape player owned ports guide looks at whether speed based crew have any use and if there are better crew to use.

Speed crew are the dwarven engineer, 400 speed, arc; fireworks enthusiast, skull region, 800 speed; fireworks enthusiast, 800 speed, skull; fireworks expert, 1,200 speed, hook; explosives expert, 2,000, scythe; and fireworks maniac, 2,500 speed, bowl.

RuneScape players are never going to need 2,500 speed, so a speed crew from a lower region is more than enough to boost any ship to max speed. There is no point in expending scarce resources when extra resources from earlier regions work just fine.

Using a speed crew means trying to meet voyage requirements with only four crew slots. Voyages in the current region usually require a full crew to hit 80% and voyages in earlier regions are at the maximum speed without the speed crew. Therefore, other ways of speed may be more worthwhile.

The rudder provides speed. Upgrading the rudder, especially in later regions, provides a significant speed increase. RuneScape players will have to decide if speed is more important than other upgrades such as crew, ship, and office for additional ships in regions that are applicable.

Captains provide speed. A speed captain worth 2,500 chimes is better than a trait captain worth 100 chimes. A speed captain worth 10,000 chimes, combines for 1,050 in the three traits, an overall improvement despite being weaker ion the specialty trait. Higher tier speed captains that replace lower tier trait captains provide speed and ultimately are replaced with highest tier trait captains when speed is no longer needed.

First mates, eastern overseers, bureaucrats, and judges of dice boost speed per crew. In most cases, this speed boost is more than sufficient.

As a last resort, bags of winds provide a 10% speed boost. Won from port randoms, they are not common and thus should be used when important. If three are in stock, using one frees up room for another.
