RuneScape players who are playing Player owned ports can expect to unlock the hook region within a week of starting. The hook region gives the resource black slate.
Black slate is initially used to hire crew members and upgrade the ship. Then it is used for multiple port upgrades. The most important of these is upgrading the office, which unlocks a third ship. As the ship and crew upgrades are essential for success especially towards the latter part of exploring the region, RuneScape players may have unlocked the scythe by the time they buy the third ship.
Hook voyages take between 100-140 minutes to complete, depending on speed. As the ship, crew, and captains are upgraded, the voyages will tend more towards the lower figure. Six full days of sailing in the hook should be sufficient to unlock the scythe region.
Thus, it is possible to still be sailing in the hook to obtain slate with the scythe unlocked. As scythe voyages are approximately four hours long, it may be necessary to balance them with hook voyages or bamboo if pressed for time, as the office needs 3,000 of it to upgrade.
