RuneScape players managing player owned ports are given a captain but need a crew. This RuneScape player owned ports guide focuses on hiring crew in the arc (bamboo) region.
Open the crew interface and hire any free captains and crew members. Some crew members and captains have better stats, but cost port resources to hire. These should be hired more carefully. Don't discard them if you cannot hire, as returning voyages will provide more resources.
Remember that new crewmen will have base stats equal or higher than stats of high leveled lower crew. Leveling the crew is good, but it is just a short term gain.
Free crew members are smuggler, stowaway, and traveling drunk. Each start out with 70 in their respective skill of morale (green bandanna,) combat (red bandanna,) and seafaring (blue bandanna.) The bandanna colors hold true for all levels of crew.
Because these are free, RuneScape players can hire in bulk and then fire the ones with negative traits, retaining those with better base stats.
Varrock chefs, Brimhaven pirates, and Catherby fishermen start with 150 in their base stat and also may have traits or bonuses. These cost resources to hire, but provide greater bonuses players will need to get through the bamboo and accumulate gunpowder for hiring the next level crew.
Dwarven engineers can be purchased, these give a speed boost to hasten voyages. Ardougne shopkeepers provide a small morale boost and increase rewards by 10%. Bamboo golems are a hybrid of morale and combat, and will lay their life down in place of other crew should something happen. First mates add 25 in each stat to each crew and often are key to balancing the ship (but these don't stack, so one per ship.) The unlocking of the island cyclosis allows cyclops to be hired. Cyclops are an improved version of the combat morale hybrid, compared to the golem.
