Kati Stern, founder and designer of Venexiana, is known as the go-to-fashion house for rock-n-roll haute couture. I caught up with her backstage at Fashion Week to talk about her Fall Collection. And, of course, the first thing I wanted to know was how she decided on the name Venexiana? “I fell in love with Venice, Italy and it has had an influence, and has been an inspiration on my entire life. Venexiana is the 18th century Italian spelling of Venice.”
Her 79 designs, twice as many as most shows, ranged from edgy to ornate. Maybe we all need a trip to Venice! Stern says it is always the fabrics and the colors that inspire her. Sultry models strutted down the runway in sexy, fitted evening wear. The stunning fabrics included metallic, silk, taffeta, chiffon and fur.
The striking, rich color palette consisted of deep shades of red, burgundy, gold, gray and black with intricate beading and embellishments. I asked if she had a favorite in the vast collection. “They are all my favorites, they are like my children. Each one is special and unique.” I couldn’t agree more.
Also reflected in her couture line is her love of art history. “Art and costumes are a part of what I am all about. It’s the textures and fabrics that inspire me too.”
Besides her passion for fashion, Kati Stern loves rock-n-roll, baroque opera, and yes, Venice!
Trending: She says it is up to the woman to feel comfortable. It is who you are, and what you feel about yourself. Being confident and self-assured.
Rundown on the Runway will continue throughout Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center.
