Anyone remember the sci-fi thriller, "Barbarella", circa 1968 with Jane Fonda? I didn’t think so. Well, fashion designer Joanna Mastroianni certainly does. I caught up with her, backstage at Fashion Week at Lincoln Center in New York City to talk about her eclectic and stunning creations. “My fall collection is inspired by "Barbarella". You will see a bunch of metals that have inspired fabrics, and lots of jewel tones throughout the show.”
Her 36 designs include sexy, glamorous evening gowns, sophisticated, mod pantsuits and must have hot-pink party frocks, perfect for runway after parties. The stunning fabrics include leather, hand-beaded silk tulle, silk organza, wool and wild goat. I don’t seem to recall them in the movie!
Mastroianni is known for her versatile, wearable luxurious collections. “I design for an ageless, modern woman. A connoisseur who is passionate about life and appreciates beautiful things.” Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Sarah Jessica Parker and Eva Longoria are just a few of the celebs who have worn her sophisticated, sexy and “of the moment” garments.
Besides her passion for fashion, Joanna says she loves gardening and calls it her therapy and inspiration place. “My last collection was inspired by my actual garden. We took photographs of it, and I translated it into my fabrics. It was like having my garden go down the catwalk with us, which was really fun.”
Trending: Cool, modern pantsuits and wearing more color, like reds, teals and jewel tones.
Rundown on the Runway will continue throughout Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center.
