According to Cinema Blend on Friday, with the "Ant-Man" directorial situation now finally cemented with Peyton Reed, rumor has it Marvel Studios is considering "Star Trek Into Darkness'" Benedict Cumberbatch and "Dark Knight's" Tom Hardy for the role in the "Doctor Strange" movie. Right now, it could be anyone's lead role, but right now it remains to be seen.
Marvel Studios has been compiling an ensemble of cast members for the fantasy film and right now it appears that Cumberbatch and Hardy are the main contenders on said list. It's also likely that Marvel feels that the Stephen Strange is going to play a major key role in phase three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Some may have seen in a rooftop interrogation scene in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" between Steve Rogers and Black Widow as they were attempting to acquire intelligence by S.H.I.E.L.D. traitor and Hydra agent Jasper Sitwell, played by Maximiliano Hernández. As Black Widow launches Sitwell off the rooftop and the agent thinks he's falling to his death, Falcon, played by Anthony Mackie rescues him. With fear now a motivator, Sitwell reveals Hydra's purpose and objective to take out subjects capable of being a threat to them. One such threat was thought to be Doctor Stephen Strange.
For those who are unfamiliar with Stephen Strange, it was a character developed by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in the 60s where most Marvel comic book superheroes made their debut in spandex. Strange is a neurosurgeon with powers of mysticism and martial arts. He battles against the paranormal which is something the typical super hero isn't used to. He's likely the "go to" guy for all things strange, unknown, and the mysterious that happen to be a threat to the real world. So it would appear that fans are also highly excited about this casting.
