There is a rumor swirling around right now that Shane Carwin has been removed from his matchup with Cain Velasquez, which was scheduled for UFC 104 and will now face UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 106 in what will be Lesnar's first title defense.
MMA Madness was the first to report on this story. They claimed to have confirmation from a tweet put out by the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy which is where Lesnar trains.
Five Ounces of Pain also has posted a story about this. They have contacted sources who were unable to either confirm or deny the proposed matchup between the two heavyweight behemoths.
Lesnar recently unified the heavyweight championship by steamrolling over Frank Mir at UFC 100. Lesnar utilized his superior size and strength advantage by keeping Mir on his back as he pummeled him repeatedly in the face with his fists. The win also gave Lesnar a measure of revenge as he was able to defeat the only man to have ever beaten him. Mir defeated Lesnar via submission in Lesnar's organizational debut at UFC 81 in February of 2008.
Carwin is coming off the biggest win of his career as he defeated former #1 contender Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 96 in March. Carwin was able to bounce back after Gonzaga landed a take down. Carwin got back to his feet and knocked Gonzaga out in just over one minute. The win pushed Carwin's record to 11-0 with all of his fights ending in less than two and a half minutes.
Both men are standout wrestlers and have to cut down to make the heavyweight division limit of 265lbs. Carwin was scheduled to face Velasquez as the co-main event of UFC 104 which is scheduled for October. It was thought that the winner of that bout would then go on to face Lesnar early in 2010. According to reports, Velasquez is fine physically. The UFC may want to showcase Lesnar in the month of October as it has been reported that Fedor Emelianenko will be making his Strikeforce debut sometime that same month.
UFC 106 is scheduled to take place on November 21st from Las Vegas, Nevada. Also scheduled for the night's card is the return of Tito Ortiz to the UFC as he will face off against UFC Hall of Famer, Mark Coleman. A welterweight bout between Jon Fitch and Ricardo Almeida has also been rumored for this card or for UFC 105.
Fighter's Only is reporting that they have been able to confirm that this fight is indeed going to take place at UFC 106. The purpose of this bout was to save both of the UFC's best prospects in Carwin and Velasquez. If they were to fight each other, the loser would be pushed down the ranks a bit. By pulling the plug on their bout the UFC can have Velasquez ready to take on the winner.
