Canadian Mountie Jack (Daniel Lissing) is hailed a hero after putting away the dangerous Tolliver outlaws. As a hero, Jack has his choice of posts and has decided to return to Coal Valley for good. He believes the Coal Valley is where he belongs and he can continue to court pretty schoolteacher Elizabeth (Erin Krakow, "Chance at Romance").

Elizabeth sees her younger sister Julie (Charlotte Hegele) off in the stagecoach. As Julie boards, another woman gets off the coach and greets Elizabeth. The gorgeous woman, Rosemary LeVeaux (Pascale Hutton), is about to complicate life in Coal Valley, as she announces that Jack is her fiancée.

Elizabeth is crushed that Jack never mentioned his engagement. It turns out that Jack and Julie are no longer engaged, because Julie broke up with Jack to pursue her career two years earlier. Julie is very positive and direct as she tells Jack that she will do whatever it takes to get him back.

Jack tries to explain that Julie is in his past, but Elizabeth is furious with the handsome Mountie. While Julie pursues Jack, the personable actress makes a big splash in town, becoming popular with the townspeople. She wastes no time making Coal Valley her home. As Julie taunts Elizabeth, the schoolteacher becomes jealous and her confidence is shaken.

Bill Avery (Jack Wagner, "The Bold and the Beautiful," "My Gal Sunday") is another newcomer to Coal Valley. Jack has asked Bill, a Mountie forensic investigator and friend, to help Abigail (Lori Loughlin, "Full House," "Garage Sale Mystery") make a case against Gowen (Martin Cummins) and the Pacific Northwest Mining Company regarding the tragic mine explosion.

Bill and Abigail work on the case together and an attraction develops. Bill heroically sends Gowen away when he villanously threatens Abigail.

Elizabeth helps a new student (Ty Wood) realize his potential, encouraging him to pursue an education instead of working in the mines. Her dreama for the bright young man are thwarted by his family's financial necessity.

Elizabeth's father sends a letter expressing his concern about her safety. He writes that she has received a very good offer to teach at a prestigious school back East. In light of her disappointment with Jack, she wonders if she should leave Coal Valley for the tempting offer.
