Six matches scheduled across Florida for the second Saturday in January

The Florida Rugby Union (FRU) has scheduled six matches to be played across Florida on the second Saturday of January 2013. Four of these games involve Division II (D-II) Rugby Football Clubs (RFC), while the other two matches will be played by RFCs competing at the Division III (D-III) level.

In this edition of the column, the Tampa Bay Rugby Examiner provides a preview of Saturday’s matches from all parts of the Sunshine State for ruggers and ruggers at heart.

Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg battle for MacDinton’s Cup

The Tampa Bay Krewe RFC (4-0-1) is hosting the St. Petersburg Pelicans RFC (1-2-0) at Cuscaden Park on Saturday as the two clubs battle to see which one can take home the MacDinton’s Cup. Kickoff time for the match is 2 p.m., and the address is 2900 N 15th Street in Tampa.

The post-game social will be held at MacDinton’s on SoHo, which is located at 405 South Howard Ave in Tampa.

Hammerheads to battle Buccaneers to determine best club in southern Florida

In what the Rugby in Florida website has billed as the “marquee matchup of the week, if not the season,” the Naples Hammerheads RFC (4-1-0) is hosting the Boca Raton Buccaneers RFC (4-1-0) on Saturday at the Estero (Fla.) Recreational Center. The address for this complex is 9200 Corkscrew Palms Blvd in Estero.

Due to the Buccaneers’ travel arrangements, the kickoff time for this match has been bumped up to 1 p.m.

Orlando hosts Daytona Beach at Lorna Doone Park

The Orlando Griffins RFC (3-1-1) will host the Daytona Beach RFC (1-3-0) on the Griffins home pitch at Lorna Doone Park. This park can be found at 1519 West Church Street in Orlando. Kickoff time for the match is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Orlando is currently ranked second place in Northern Division of the FRU Florida, and trying to take over the top spot from its rival to its west – the Tampa Bay Krewe.

Second crosstown match for Miami squads scheduled for Saturday

The second match of the 2012-2013 Rugby Season between the Miami Tridents RFC (3-3-0) versus the Miami RFC (0-6-0) will be played on Saturday afternoon at Ives Dairy Estates – the home pitch for the Miami RFC.

The address for the match is 20901 Northeast 16th Ave in Miami. Kickoff time for the game is scheduled for 2:30 p.m., or 30 minutes later than the traditional 2 p.m. start for Saturday matches.

Two D-II clubs take time to rest this weekend

The Jacksonville RFC (0-3-0) and the Fort Lauderdale Knights RFC (3-3-0) have this weekend off.

D-III level matches scheduled for Saturday

There are two FRU D-III level matches scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 12.

In Cocoa, Fla., Brevard Old Red Eye RFC (2-0) will host the Sarasota Saracens RFC (1-1). Kickoff time is 2 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Gainesville Hogs RFC (1-1) is scheduled to take the Indian River Raptors RFC (0-2) in Gainesville, Fla. This game will begin at 2 p.m.

The Palm Beach Panthers RFC (2-0) and the Treasure Coast Pirates RFC (0-2) will not play on Saturday.
