Rudy Gay trade rumors have a Toronto Raptors trade getting even closer for the Memphis Grizzlies. According to a report from Yahoo! late on Tuesday night (Jan. 29), the teams are now looking to bring another franchise into the deal. Soon a three-team deal could emerge from this and change the postseason outlook in several cities.
There are a lot of players involved in a proposed deal, with Toronto wanting Gay and needing to give up point guard Jose Calderon in the process. The problem is that Memphis doesn't want Calderon, so what they need is a third team that is will to take on his contract. The good news is that Calderon is in the final year of his current deal, so it might not be too difficult to find another team willing to join the discussions.
One sticking point in the negotiations seems to be that Memphis really likes Terrence Ross, but Toronto has been very hesitant to include his name in any deal. That's a good move by Toronto, because Ross could end up being an NBA star at some point. There isn't any point to the team trading away its youth in an effort to get rid of some of the bigger contracts they have on the books.
When it comes to all the Rudy Gay trade rumors out there, it seems like a Toronto Raptors trade might be the most likely scenario at this point. The Memphis Grizzlies are still trying to shed payroll, which might end up really harming how competitive the team can be in the postseason, but sometimes that is just how a business works.
If Jose Calderon can go to a contending team, his fantasy basketball value could go up even further. Likewise, if Gay ended up going to the Raptors, they might lean more heavily on him to put up numbers.
