There are a lot of players involved in a proposed deal, with Toronto wanting Gay and needing to give up point guard Jose Calderon in the process. The problem is that Memphis doesn't want Calderon, so what they need is a third team that is will to take on his contract. The good news is that Calderon is in the final year of his current deal, so it might not be too difficult to find another team willing to join the discussions.
One sticking point in the negotiations seems to be that Memphis really likes Terrence Ross, but Toronto has been very hesitant to include his name in any deal. That's a good move by Toronto, because Ross could end up being an NBA star at some point. There isn't any point to the team trading away its youth in an effort to get rid of some of the bigger contracts they have on the books.
