Rubio's New Ancho Citrus Shrimp Burritos and Burrito Especials have great taste

This January, Rubio's, known fine Mexican foods and a commitment to using sustainable seafood and green products, has introduced one new burrito and updated an old burrito favorite. These are both available by themselves or as part of combo meals with beans, chips and a drink.

The new Ancho Citrus Shrimp Burrito features pan-seared sustainable shrimp, basted in ancho chiles, garlic, cilantro, a blend of canola and olive oil, and a squeeze of lime. The taste on this burrito was excellent, very different from the usual burrito.There were plenty of shrimp inside, with the perfectly cooked shrimp folded into a nice large flour tortilla. Citrus rice with a touch of lime added a nice freshness to the filling and could be upped even more by a squeeze of lime from the fresh salsa bar. Guacamole, salsa fresca, a red tomato salsa and a creamy chipotle sauce added a nice kick to the taste. Texturally, crisp romaine lettuce and black beans added a nice element to the burrito. The blend of these sauces really worked well, with the creaminess of the chipotle tempering the red tomatillo salsa just enough to keep the heat at a good level. It was a very enjoyable burrito and a nice change from the usual chicken and meat burritos.

The new Burrito Especial takes the same sauce, salsa and fillings and combines them with either grilled steak or chicken. The Burrito Especial has been a customer favorite for 10 years at Rubio's, but due to the ever-changing tastes of their customers it was decided that it was time to update the burritos. Trying the steak, it was easy to notice how well both the creamy chipotle sauce and the red tomatillo salsa both went with the tender beef. Again, the combination gave a nice heat, not overpowering but certainly enough to let you know it was there.

The new creamy chipotle sauce is clearly a highlight of both of these burritos. By providing heat but at the same time cooling down the taste buds, the sauce enables the tasting of the nuances of the hotter elements rather than just a rush of heat. It is a great way to allow everyone to enjoy spicier food without feeling that it is “too hot”, Since Rubio's has a nice variety of salsas on their salsa bar including the roasted chipotle salsa, it is easy to add more “FIRE” to the steak or chicken burritos if that is the way you like it. Either way, Rubio's has created a new, delicious take on both an old standby and a new, creative way to get more sustainable seafood into a person's diet.
