Ruben Studdard talks 112-pound weight loss, 'Biggest Loser' exit and diabetes

Ruben Studdard has lost 112 pounds since he began competing on season 15 of the "Biggest Loser" but was recently eliminated for a second time.

But Studdard, 35, is less concerned with winning the competition as he is with continuing his weight-loss journey and managing his type 2 diabetes.

During a conference call with reporters (via E!), Ruben denied that his return to the "Biggest Loser" after being sent home earlier this season was a ratings ploy.

"I have no control over what people decide to do," said the "American Idol" winner.

My only concern was my health and coming back to the show [to lose weight]. I don't think it was a conspiracy to bring me back. I don't think they wanted me back any more or any less, it was just something that happened. And because of fairness issues, they brought me back."

This season has been filled with other unexpected turns. Trainer Jillian Michaels was recently reprimanded on air for breaking the show's rules after giving her contestant caffeine pills. At the time, Jillian flippantly insisted she did nothing wrong because caffeine supplements are safe.

But Jillian was slammed by fitness experts, who were disgusted at her cavalier attitude toward the weight-loss competition's rules. Michaels later claimed the show over-hyped her caffeine-pill incident to boost ratings.

Meanwhile, Studdard is thrilled with his weight-loss progress and with his improved health since shedding over 104 pounds. The 6-foot-3 Ruben, who previously tipped the scales at 462 pounds, now weighs a healthier 350 pounds.

Ruben is still losing weight at home, thanks to a reduced-calorie diet and regular workouts. While competing on the "Biggest Loser," Studdard was shocked after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. He manages his diabetes with diet, exercise, and stress-reduction techniques.

"Finding out that I was diabetic was like a real shock," he said. "I have a lot to keep me motivated to stay healthy."

Looking back on his time on the "Biggest Loser" ranch, Ruben has nothing but fond memories despite how much hard work it entailed.

"I really appreciate everything that I learned on the ranch," said the Velvet Teddy Bear. "It was a wonderful experience. I met wonderful people that I'll probably be friends with for the rest of my life."
