Royalty around the world reacted to the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan late yesterday. Britain’s Prince of Wales visited with his wife the Duchess of Cornwall in 2008. He released the following message to HIH Emperor Akihito:
It was with the greatest shock and sadness that my wife and I heard the terrible news this morning of a massive earthquake in north-east Japan. I can only begin to imagine the horrifying situation with which local communities and your emergency services are having to deal with.
We have been following reports closely and I wanted Your Majesty to know how much our hearts go out to the families and friends of all those who have lost their lives, have been injure, or have seen their property destroyed.
You are constantly in our thoughts and prayers at this most dreadful and challenging of times.
HM Queen Elizabeth also sent a message to Emperor Akihito:
Prince Philip joins me in extending our heartfelt sympathy to your Majesty and the people of Japan. Our prayers and thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by the dreadful disaster.
HM Queen Rania of Jordan took to Twitter:
Awestruck by devastating power of nature in Japan. Thoughts & prayers are with those who lost loved ones, & those who wait in uncertainty.
HM King Harald V of Norway sent the following message:
It is with deep grief that I am following the news about the terrible earthquake and tsunami which have struck your country, taking a heavy human toll and causing such widespread damage.
I wish to convey to Your Majesty on behalf of myself and the Norwegian people my heartfelt condolences and my deepest sympathy with you and with the bereaved and people in Japan otherwise afflicted by this natural disaster.
