So the Royal Wedding has come and gone and, once the dress was finally revealed, it seems that all anyone wants to talk about is what was seen on the heads of the wedding guests. The Royal family has long been known for their love of outstanding, unusual, and attention getting headwear. While most of the hats seen at today’s wedding were made by the London based designer Philip Treacy that doesn’t mean we don’t have any stellar hat designers’ right here in New Hampshire.
Cara Crass, based out of Lincoln, New Hampshire, sells a wide variety of hats, headbands, and fascinators from her Death Glam Couture Etsy.com shop. Never heard of a fascinator before? These can range from large colorful hair accessories to small hats that are normally held on to the head by an elastic band, hair pin, or clip. The Queen of England herself has a huge collection of fascinators but is well known for hating the elastic band style. She uses an old fashioned hat pin to keep her unusual headgear carefully in place.
Cara Crass is mother to two girls and works as a model stylist. The fascinating hats and headgear found in her shop started as a hobby and has taken off from there. Part of what led her to create the Death Glam couture line was to have stylish and unique pieces when doing her model styling.
Many of her pieces use colorful feathers, jewels, vintage accessories, lace and tulle, and even skulls. Yes, skulls. She works carefully with several area taxidermists to obtain these unique pieces. But for those a little squeamish at the thought of wearing a fox skull or part of a mink jaw on their head she offers a vegan collection as well.

The unique designs of Cara Crass can be seen here at the Death Glam Couture Esty.com shop. She also offers a line of handmade jewelry through the same shop. You can also find a small selection of vintage items that she has collected or used to create over the years. It's a great option if you fell in love with the colorful outrageous headgear seen at the Royal wedding and want something from a local artisan. Even better, while Philip Treacy hats start at about $1,000 and can get into the tens of thousands for custom creations like those seen at the Royal Wedding, the wonderful headpieces from Cara Crass range from a modest $15 to $200.
