The Royal Sonesta Hotel Boston has a great deal for families. The hotel offers Family Fun Weekends throughout the year. Their Family Fun package includes accommodations, four passes to the Museum of Science, complimentary use of the atrium pool, and cookies and milk every night at bedtime. All this for just $169 per night. The February school vacation week rate for the package is $219 per night.

Stepping outside the Royal Sonesta’s front door you’ll find the Museum of Science. Founded in 1830 the museum has been rated #3 by Parents Magazine in their list of Ten Best Science Centers in the United States. It currently houses 700 interactive exhibits attracting over a million visitors each year. Some things not to miss are the displays in the Charles Hayden Planetarium, shows at the Mugar Omni Theater and the 3-D Digital Cinema. The butterfly garden is a tropical oasis overlooking the Charles River where visitors get up close and personal with hundreds of live butterflies from all over the world. From now until May 6th you can observe 60 live geckos and learn about their fascinating world in the museum’s exhibit Geckos: Tails to Toepads.

Boston offers a myriad of things to do, visit the New England Aquarium, the Museum of Fine Arts (free on Wednesday nights after 4pm), the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Children’s Museum or the Institute of Contemporary Art (free on Thursday nights after 5pm). Boston is easy to reach from the Royal Sonesta via the MBTA Green Line, a ten minute walk from the hotel. Or, take advantage of the hotel’s complimentary shuttle van to various places in Boston.

The Visitor Information Center on the Boston Common is the start of the 2 ½ mile Freedom Trail with sixteen historic sites pertaining to our battle with Great Britain, the American Revolution, to gain our independence in the 18th century. The center sells maps and books about the trail if you wish to walk it alone. The Freedom Trail Foundation offers daily guided tours at 12pm and 1pm where you walk one mile on the trail with a costumed guide giving you the history. Tickets can be purchased inside the visitor center.

Once back at the Royal Sonesta ask the front desk staff for the art tour map, a self-guided tour of the hotel’s 100 piece collection of works by Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Sir Anthony Caro and Buckminster Fuller. They are sprinkled around outdoor grounds, in the guest rooms, the lobby, hallways, Restaurant dante and the ArtBar restaurant.
