Maryland-based striker Roya Darvishian said on March 11 in an exclusive interview with Long Island MMA Examiner Eric Holden that she earned a decision victory over Rachel Sazoff to remain undefeated in 2013.
Darvishian, who fought Sazoff on March 9 in Winchester, Virginia under the Revolution Sports banner, saw all three rounds go in her favor.
"It was a good fight," Darvishian said of the brawl with Sazoff. "I came out swinging, but I had planned to take it to the ground, so that's what I did. I tried passing, but kept cautious so I landed some blows in her guard. It went all three rounds in my favor. She was a really nice girl and a good opponent."
With the victory, Darvishian stays perfect in 2013 and improves to 4-2 overall.
Darvishian isn't exactly sure where to go from here, but she's open to boxing, BJJ, wrestling or MMA competitions. She just hopes to stay busy.
"I know I'm doing a New York open in April, and a boxing match as soon as I can find a opponent," Darvishian said. "The next year I'm just going to be competing in a lot of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, wrestling and boxing competitions unless something at 105 pounds in mixed martial arts is thrown at me."
Darvishian, 21, is one of the most exciting young, up-and-coming strawweights on the east coast, but it has been a struggle for her to find opponents in her weight class.
She prefers to fight at 105 pounds, but it's tough to find opponents in that light. Darvishian often fights at 115 pounds, and not in her natural 105-pound class.
Despite the lack of legitimate MMA opponents at her natural weight class, she plans to keep pushing forward as the year progresses.
"I expect to go pro," Darvishian said. "I'm going to fight whoever they put in front of me."
