Roy Jones Jr. wants to become the mayor of Pensacola, Florida

Boxing icon Roy Jones Jr. told TMZ Wednesday that he plans to run for mayor this autumn in Pensacola, Florida.

Jones (56-8, 40 KOs) has amassed in excess of 5,000 signatures and completed the necessary paperwork to become an eligible candidate.

A six-time world titlist and native of P-Cola, Junior’s campaign will concentrate on bettering the lives of local children.

"I tell the kids, don't fight in the streets,” said Jones, 45, who has collected crowns in four weight classes and was named the 1990s Fighter of the Decade.

“Go into MMA, go into boxing. Do something that someone can be proud of you for. A lot of kids don't have proper leadership at home. I'm willing to try and be that person for them."

Jones’ peak moment as a pro likely occurred in March 2003 when he became the first middleweight champion to capture a heavyweight belt in more than 100 years by outscoring John Ruiz.

Unfortunately, Jones is now prone to suffering brutal knockouts and is a substandard 8-7 over his past 15 paydays.

Considered one of history’s premier pound-for-pound pugilists, Jones has become a graying liability who should forever vacate the squared circle.

Regardless of the ultimate result, Roy Jones Jr. deserves credit for trying to provide “proper leadership at home.”
