Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay got light up on Wednesday in his first start of the season. His fantasy value has been plummeting since then with many fantasy owners looking to trade him and some even dropping the former two-time Cy Young winner (he is only 96% owned at this point).
Halladay is 35 years old and it seems age is catching up with him. After four straight seasons with over 200 strikeouts and an earned run average under three, Halladay had a bad year last season posting only 11 wins, 132 K's, and a 4.49 ERA. The experts ranked him pretty lowly with Scott Pianowski from Yahoo! dropping him all the way down to 60th at the position of SP.
People didn't buy into it and still drafted Halladay pretty highly (average draft position was round 7.6 - ahead of players such as Yovani Gallardo, Jordan Zimmerman, and Matt Moore). But after how badly Halladay's first start went a few days ago, maybe ranking him at 60 wasn't so far-fetched after all.
Halladay lasted just 3.1 innings in the opener against the Braves. He allowed five earned runs including two home runs. His ERA will start the year at 13.50. On the bright side, at least he struck out nine so there is still some hope of the "old" Halladay returning. So should you give up on him in fantasy? Not yet!
