Rousey thinks Diaz will return

Ronda Rousey has a lot on her plate. In just three days the former Olympian faces Miesha Tate at UFC 168 in Las Vegas. At stake will be her bantamweight championship and continued bragging rights against her archrival. But “Rowdy” was recently asked about something other than her upcoming the fight. The topic, a friend and training partner Nick Diaz. After losing to George St-Pierre at UFC 158, the Stockton native claimed he was done with fighting. Speaking to Fox Sports Live, Rousey thinks that proclamation might be a bit premature:

“I think he will (return to fight in 2014). Nick’s been fighting for a really long time. This sport puts a lot of miles on you quickly.

“If he feels he needs a rest … you can’t fight for anyone other than yourself. You can’t fight sooner than you feel like you should.”

If Diaz does come back, one would have to assume he wouldn’t need to string too many wins together before getting another shot at the welterweight championship. With GSP taking a break, a Diaz/Hendricks or Diaz/Lawler bout sounds fresh and would likely draw the interest of many MMA fans. According to some reports, “El Diablo” already turned down a rematch with Carlos Condit. Condit was the man who handed Diaz a loss at UFC 143 by unanimous decision.

Should we have really seen the last of Nick Diaz he’ll leave the sport with a 26-9-1 professional MMA record. He also held both the WEC and Strikeforce welterweight titles.
