Roundworms and tapeworms in cats

See also

If your cat's feces includes what looks like undigested spaghetti noodles, he/she more than likely has roundworms. A roundworm is a disgusting parasite that hatches from larvae deposited in your cat's digestive system that he/she ingests by eating infected prey or infected fleas. Other symptoms include diarrhea vomiting, and weight loss.
Tapeworms have the same effects and symptoms as roundworms, but their appearance is dissimilar. They'll look like long, flat white ribbons in your cat's feces.

To rid your cat of either type of worm, you'll need to go to your veterinarian immediately for a series of oral deworming medication.

Pyrantel pamoate is a safe, successful choice and can even be used in nursing kittens. Kittens should be dewormed by 3 weeks of age to avert contamination of their quarters by ascarid eggs. A second round should be given two to three weeks later to kill any adult worms that were in the larval stage at the initial deworming. Consequent courses are indicated if eggs or worms are found in the stool. A lot of veterinarians propose deworming kittens monthly until 6 months of age.

Pyrantel pamoate dewormers can be purchased from your veterinarian. You don’t have to fast your cat before using this particular medication. Make it a point to follow the directions of the manufacturer about the dosage. Milbemycin, ivermectin, and selamectin are also very effective dewormers, but they are normally used in older kittens and adult cats.

Ascarids can cause a disease in humans known as visceral larva migrans. This is considered to be a staid public health problem and is one of the pinnacle zoonotic diseases. However, most cases are caused by the canine ascarid, Toxocara canis, but Toxocara cati also can manufacture this disease. Some cases are reported every year, usually from areas with a mild climate. Children are most commonly affected, and often have a history of eating dirt. Outdoor sandboxes should always be covered when not in use to prevent cats from using them as giant litter boxes, and garden gloves should be worn when gardening.
