Tip of the Week

If you don’t already know about it, the Peak Arts Fund is a great way to indulge in the local culture – while you’re helping to fund it. The Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region program will support 15 regional arts organizations, including the Business of Art Center, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Cottonwood Center for the Arts and Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts. You can make a tax-deductible donation of $60 and receive a Peak Arts Card, good for one year of discounts. See the Peak Arts Fund site for details.

Announcements

I have decided that it’s time to end my work on this site. It has been very rewarding – I’ve gotten to meet and write about terrific people, galleries and organizations – but it’s time-consuming and not very lucrative. I greatly appreciate all the support I’ve received over the past two and a half years from readers and contributors. If anyone is interested in taking over this site, please contact me (rhonda.vanpelt@comcast.net) and I’ll help you get started. Even though it doesn’t pay much, it is a valuable stepping stone to other opportunities. Also, if any of you need PR assistance, please contact me – my rates are reasonable. I’ll see you at the next opening or gallery talk!

Aaron Brothers’ Great Frame Trade-In runs through April 14. Take in your used frames – in any condition – and you’ll receive a coupon good for $5 off any regular-priced frame of $19.99 or less, or $10 off any regular-priced frame of $20 or more. The donated frames will go to local chapters of Habitat for Humanity. The local Aaron Brothers is at 7330 N. Academy Blvd. and is open 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays and 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sundays. Information: 548-1122.

The Business of Art Center offers studio space at the best rates in the area. All studios are fully equipped for woodworking and welding, mixed media, printmaking, painting, ceramics and papermaking. Studio artists also may display their work in the BAC’s three galleries and the Gift Gallery. The BAC is at 513 Manitou Ave., Manitou Springs, and is open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays. Information: Liz at 685-1861.

The Colorado Springs Art Guild will change its meeting dates and location, effective immediately. The guild will meet 7-8:30 p.m. the last Tuesday of each month at the Rockrimmon Branch Library, 832 Village Center Drive, near the Safeway at the corner of Rockrimmon and Vindicator. Chuck Mardosz will be the featured speaker on March 27. For more information, see the site.

Posters commemorating the Chair Project, which took place in Manitou on Oct. 9, are available at the Business of Art Center, 513 Manitou Ave. in Manitou Springs. Proceeds benefit the BAC’s art programs and the Manitou Springs Volunteer Fire Department, Partnership for Healthy Choices, St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and Community Congregational Church. Information: 685-1861.

The Pikes Peak Community Foundation has announced its Ingenuity Grants, some of which focus on the arts. Projects should be community-oriented and, preferably, involve children. Grants generally are for $500 to $5,000, and applications are accepted throughout the year. See the PPCF’s overview page for details.

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Galleries of Contemporary Art, have founded the Gerry Riggs Exhibition Fund in memory of the late gallery director. The fund will support one exhibition every year, featuring artists from across the nation. Consider donating through the CU Foundation.

The Club of Arts always needs volunteers for its art activities. Check out the site or call 209-8888.
