Roughnecks lose 2014 season opener to Rock

According to the National Lacrosse League website, the Toronto Rock defeated the Calgary Roughnecks 16-11 on Friday in the 2014 NLL season opener for both teams.

The Rock were led offensively by Garrett Billings of Langley, British Columbia, who notched a goal and nine assists for ten points and five goals from Stephan LeBlanc of Dundas, Ontario.

The Rock got off to an early 1-0 lead in the game, as their veterans, Colin Doyle and Josh Sanderson contributed to their opening goal. Doyle scored from Sanderson and Billings at 4:33 of the first quarter. Toronto then took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and a commanding 9-3 lead at half time.

Calgary meanwhile will have their home opener on Friday, January 10 at the Scotiabank Saddledome against the Colorado Mammoth.

Saturday night meanwhile is a huge evening in the National Lacrosse League because professional lacrosse is returning to Vancouver for the first time since 2004. The Vancouver Stealth, who moved to Vancouver in the offseason from Everett, Washington play tonight in Denver against the Mammoth. The Vancouver Stealth will then play in Langley, British Columbia, for their home debut on January 11 against the Minnesota Swarm.
