According to the National Lacrosse League website on Saturday, the Calgary Roughnecks defeated the Rochester Knighthawks 10-7 in game one of the National Lacrosse League's Champion's Cup at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The game was attended by a solid crowd of 16,541.

With the win, the Roughnecks have a slight edge on the Knighthawks heading into game two of the series Saturday night in New York state. The Roughnecks can now win either game two of the series or the ten minute mini game afterwards (if Rochester wins game two) to be declared the National Lacrosse League's Champions Cup champions.

On Saturday in Calgary, Shawn Evans of Peterborough, Ontario led the Roughnecks with four assists and five points. He also led Calgary with 15 shots.

The Roughnecks were always in control throughout the entire 60 minutes. The Knighthawks never had the lead at one point during the game.

The turning point in the game happened in the second quarter. With the Roughnecks leading 4-3, Dane Dobbie of Elora, Ontario scored twice in a span of 34 seconds. His first goal came from Daryl Veltman, who was the co-leader of the team in assists with four, and his second goal came from Dan MacRae.

Another interesting time in the game came late in the first half as Knighthawks goaltender Matt Vinc was hit hard into the boards by two Roughnecks in trying to play the ball. The hit seemed to rejuvenate the crowd and enhance their support behind Calgary.

For the Roughnecks to win the 2014 Champion's Cup, they will need to beat Rochester one final time this season. In addition to their 10-7 playoff win this past Saturday, they defeated Rochester 11-10 in Calgary on February 22. The last time the Roughnecks beat the Knighthawks in Rochester was on April 3, 2010. That night Calgary won 11-9.
