According to the National Lacrosse League website on Friday, the Calgary Roughnecks have advanced to the 2014 Champion's Cup final after eliminating the Edmonton Rush at Rexall Place in Edmonton. After the Rush defeated the Roughnecks 15-13 in game two of the series Friday, a ten minute mini-game was played. The Roughnecks won the short contest 2-1.

In game two, the Rush came out hot. They outscored the Roughnecks 8-2. Mark Matthews of Oshawa, Ontario and Zack Greer of Whitby, Ontario scored two goals each for Edmonton in the opening quarter.

The Rush in fact built an 11-2 lead in the second quarter after goals by Curtis Knight, Cory Conway and Chris Corbeil. The Roughnecks might have had no chance to win game two by the mid-way point of the second quarter, but launched a valiant effort in getting back into the contest, as they outscored the Rush 11-4 the rest of the way, and more importantly had the momentum heading into the mini-game.

In the mini-game, the Roughnecks got two early goals in the first three minutes from Shawn Evans. The Rush could only respond with a goal from Greer with 1:39 left. The Rush seemed to make the tactical mistake of coming out too hard too early and did not have enough in the tank when it mattered most.

It was the second time in the series the Roughnecks defeated the Rush by a goal. In game one on Saturday, May 10 at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the Roughnecks defeated the Rush 12-11. Curtis Dickson scored a dramatic goal with 22 seconds left in regulation on a penalty shot when the Rush were penalized for too many men on the court. Then Jeff Shattler scored the overtime winner for Calgary.

The Roughnecks will now play either the Buffalo Bandits or Rochester Knighthawks for the Champion's Cup. The Bandits have the 1-0 series lead heading into game two of the series on Saturday.
