The Berrendo Middle School was not the only school affected by violence this week. The Seven Lakes High School in Katy, Texas was evacuated yesterday (Monday, 13 January) and a student taken into custody there.
At approximately 10 a.m. the Katy Independent School District learned of a perceived threat, according to the school. The students were evacuated. It was determined to be an explosive device and the Houston bomb squad was called to the scene.
Students were finally released for the day at 1:30 p.m. However, those who drove but did not have their keys on their person, were not allowed to re-enter the school. They were instructed to find alternative transportation. After-school activities were cancelled.
The suspect, who was taken into custody yesterday, had a firearm in the trunk of the vehicle he drove to school, according to the school. The firearm had been in the vehicle the entire time.
The explosive device, according to local station KHOU-11, was a zip gun. A zip gun, by definition, is a crude homemade weapon using common components, such as a pipe, a 2x4, a hasp and duct tape. Zip guns use any common rimmed catridge.
