Bangor, ME-- The Shead Tigers girls basketball team came into their quarterfinal game against the Van Buren Crusaders on Monday evening with a game plan. That plan was to try and do everything they could to make anyone other than Parise Rossignol beat them.
What ended up happening was, not only did the other Crusaders come through but so did Rossignol. She put in 33 points on 10-15 shooting. Her first three shots were three point attempts, she made them all.
Shead coach Sarah Moore had at least two of her Tigers on Rossignol for most of the game. When you have the court awareness that Rossignol has, that just means you are picking you are picking your poison.
Rossignol dished out nine assists, including many to Ashley Wilson who finished with 16 points on 8-12 points, including 10 points in the second quarter.
Matt Rossignol is the dad and coach of Parise. Matt currently holds class B tourney records. Matt hit 17 field goals in one game and 37 in the 1985 regional tournament. Parise is also in the record book for her 44 point performance in a prelim victory over Jonesport-Beals.
Matt knows that if the opposing team puts two people on Parise, others need to step up. Wilson and others stepped for the Crusaders in the quarterfinal victory.
"Every night she (Parise) sees two defenders or at least a box and one. They (Shead) decided to go with two on her. What that means is our other girls are going to need to step up. Tonight they did," Coach Rossignol said. "(Ashley) Wilson had 10 points in the second quarter. (Felisha) Bouchard hit the open shot. Even the girls who do not typically score for me were scoring. When we have that going on, you need to pick your poison. If you want to double her (Parise), she will find them."
Parise also pulled down eight rebounds, blocked three shots and had two steals. Rossignol, Wilson and Felisha Bouchard combined to shoot 21-32 (65.6) from the field. The Crusaders shot 27-44 (61.3) as a team. Van Buren had 15 assists on their 27 field goals.
Bouchard finished with nine points, three rebounds and three assists. Wilson recorded four rebounds and two steals. Natashia Bourgoin recorded six points and four rebounds. Van Buren (17-3) will face Washburn in a semi-final game on Thursday, February 23rd at 8:35 PM.
Van Buren and Washburn played two games in the regular season and each team won on their home court. Washburn won 52-37 on December 16th. Van Buren won 66-56 on January 13th. Rossignol had 33 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in the Crusaders victory over Washburn.
"Washburn is so athletic, they are so quick. If you turn it over, it leads to instant offense with them," Coach Rossignol said. "When we beat them at home, we were able to take care of the ball. That is why we were able to win. I expect he (Washburn coach Michael Carolos) will have a different game plan."
Jenna Demolet led the Tigers with 16 points and eight rebounds. Vanessa Patterson chipped in with 12 points. five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Shead finishes the season with a 13-7 record.
