Last night at the Maidu Community Center, Campus Life and the Coalition for Placer Youth held a fundraiser to sponsor programs that help promote individual resiliency for youth who are struggling with the issues of our time including anxiety, domestic abuse, and bullying. The 2nd annual Roseville Celebrity Chili Cook-Off drew a crowd of over 250 people to select the best chili recipes from local “celebrities” including school administration and elected officials.
Rob Maxey is the leader of Campus Life in Granite Bay which also organizes Point Break events, a nationally recognized intervention program for schools to help break down barriers that can lead to hostile and counter productive behavior. The ultimate aim is to diffuse the potential for violence on campus.
“We are so grateful to have the community at large support this effort to promote the well being of youth,” Maxey said.
Among the chefs sampling their food were Oakmont High School Principal Rob Hasty, whose chili received multiple awards; Brent Mattix, Assistant Principal at Granite Bay High; Principal Marc Buljan of Eich Middle School; Rene Aguilera, Roseville Joint Union High School District Board of Trustees; Jason Rizzi, Fire Marshall; Susan Rohan, Roseville City Mayor; and Bonnie Gore, Roseville City Council.
One of the problems for youth in a cyber-powered world is that children can feel very alone and isolated in their burdens. It is ironic how we can be so connected, and yet disconnected to truth in the network which actually bullies the individual; it is easy to feel alone and isolated no matter how many “friend” connections.
Some of the serious things that the children are contending with include: hopelessness, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, abandonment, depression, drug abuse and addiction, family strife, bullying, and domestic abuse.
Brent Mattix is an Assistant Principal of Granite Bay High School. “Point Break has been very successful. It has changed students’ lives and changed the culture on our campus for the better,” he said.
The Coalition for Placer Youth, a grass roots organization funded by a federal Drug Free Communities grant, is focused on youth substance abuse prevention strategies at home and in the community. Alan Baker is the Co-Steering Committee Chair for CPY. “We know that parents are the most influential factor in youth saying no to drugs and alcohol, so we are focused on helping parents relate to kids about staying drug and alcohol-free” he said. “By the same token, we also support efforts to help youth become resilient and form stronger, healthier peer communities. Campus Life has been doing our community a great service in this regard.”
