David Beckman, 65, of Roselle, a suburb of Chicago, pleaded guilty on Friday to animal cruelty, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, battery, and telephone harassment reported the DailyHerald.com.
Beckman was sentenced to 180 days in jail and credited with time served. For the animal cruelty and battery charges, Beckman was given two years probation.
In May 2013, Beckman was arrested for soliciting a teenage boy. As the DuPage County Sheriff's Office investigated the allegation, authorities learned about Beckman raping his pet peacock named Phyl. The bird died from its injuries, and officers found the dead bird's body in Beckman's garage.
According to the defense attorney, Beckman was a highly decorated Vietnam War veteran. He has been under treatment at a secure facility through the Illinois Department of Human Services and the Department of Veteran Affairs.
