No one would be shocked to hear that a teenager “bucked the system” and that he chose a path not originally intended by the school system.
Here is a great example:
Alek Skarlatos, senior at Roseburg High School in Douglas County Oregon, arrived for an indoor session of traditional senior class photos.
He asked for an American flag to be used as the background.
Skarlatos was informed at the photo-shoot that they only used the American flag as background for members of Junior ROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) wearing their uniform.
When asked by the photographer if that was STILL what he wanted for his senior picture, he smiled and said “Yes”.
He also replied, “Not just JROTC students are patriots.”
Skarlatos got his American flag background but was informed that it will not appear in the school’s annual yearbook because the background was dedicated to JROTC members.
Alek isn’t complaining. His family will always know where his heart was the day senior class pictures were taken.
He hasn’t decided if he will follow his older brother’s footsteps into the military.
Examiner’s Note: Patriots come in all sizes, shapes, colors and ages and should be encouraged not deterred on every level. Maybe by the time the RHS yearbook goes to the printer someone will change their mind (policy).
Thank you for reading and thank you for supporting the troops.

That seems a bit narrow-minded of the school's yearbook staff....too bad. Good for him for getting the background that he wanted - looks great!
When the policy was started they probably never gave it a thought that others might want to identify with the American flag, too. I hope someone at RHS reads it and re-thinks the policy. After all, Alek wasn't wearing a uniform. The uniform itself would identify the JROTC.
I'm not sure if it is the school or the photographer...
