As a jeans-and-T-shirt sort of person, your Tournament of Roses Examiner doesn’t go to a lot of fashion shows, but this one couldn’t be missed. The show was emceed by style expert and TV host Keylee Sanders, a former Miss Teen USA. The Aaron Durr band provided music.

It was amazing to see how these young ladies have matured in the two months since they were chosen to serve on the Royal Court. Always poised and full of smiles, the Rose Queen and her princesses seemed to have taken on an added dimension of confidence in themselves.

Each young woman modeled three outfits, some kicky and casual, and others appropriate for evening wear. The girls also had the opportunity to choose a mentor to accompany her and model an outfit, as well.

Some of the ladies chose their moms—Queen Ana Acosta and her mother Sarah, Princess Elizabeth Woolf with mom Cathy, and Princess Katie Lipp with mom Roberta. Sarah Acosta quipped to the announcer that she is the mother of triplets, but right now Ana (the only girl) is her favorite.

Two of the girls were accompanied by their younger sisters, Princess Elyssia Widjaja by seventh-grader Enna, and Princess Sarah Hansen by Elizabeth.

Friends also played a role. Princess Jamie chose Lauren McAlister, her boyfriend’s sister who considers Jamie to be her younger sister. Princess Kayla Johnson-Granberry brought best friend Wynter Robinson, whom she helped to win the role as 2013 Homecoming Queen at Pasadena High School. An interesting note on Princess Kayla’s hyphenated last name came from grandmother Karen Stokes. Her father Donald Johnson, and her mother and stepfather Derrick and Samantha Granberry, decided to “raise her as a village.”
