With colorfully costumed dancers, gorgeous landscapes and gigantic sculptures, the “Wonderful Indonesia” float has entertained Rose Parade watchers for three years. The display and artistry won the 2014 Director’s Trophy for Outstanding Artistic Merit In Design & Floral Presentation. The float was designed by John Ramirez for Artistic Entertainment Services.
The sponsor, Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Republic of Indonesia, has chosen one section of the country to feature each year, along with national icons. East Borneo was featured on front of the 2014 float, with lush foliage and sea life native to the region, as well as a comical native orangutan swinging from a tree at the back.
Two Komodo Dragons, gigantic even in real life, looked from side to side at the center of the float. The largest lizard in the world, these monitors are found only in Indonesia. Native flora and fauna were represented in sculptures and by the carnival dancers.
The deck of the float included orchids, iris, roses and mums, with accents of dendrobium orchids and anthurium. More flowering details are in the slideshow that accompanies this article.
In 2012, the city of Pagar Alam in South Sumatra and the legendary garuda, Indonesia’s national symbol, won the President’s Trophy. The 2013 entry also won that trophy with the stupas and music of Central Java and the unusual wayang golek puppets that towered some 20 feet.
Hudoq dancers, dressed in traditional palm leaves, representing the Dayak people in East Kalimantran province were Krisantus Silvanus Higang, Array Prayoga, Adrianus Liah Blawing and Arbiyansyach. Carnival dancers were Amelia A., Dody Hermawan, Yunita Ronting, Yuyun Diah Setiorini, Fitri Amalia, Anggerlia Anugrah, Maria Evi Yupita, Hayru Abdi, Wiwin Gunawan, Devy Febiani, Doniyansyah Akhmid Katuk and Nor Fajri Badrun Umeng.
