Now’s the time to get those creative juices bubbling and come up with an exciting design for a 2014 Rose Parade float. Four self-built float organizations are running contests to determine the shape their next Rose Parade entry will take: Burbank, La Canada Flintridge, Sierra Madre and South Pasadena. Each of these four won a trophy in the 2013 Rose Parade, and they will look for a repeat in 2014.
The incoming 2014 Tournament of Roses president, R. Scott Jenkins, will not announce the theme of the parade until Jan. 18, 2013, but he did drop a few hints to float builders. Themes are usually broad enough to allow for a wide variety of designs.
- 2014 will mark the 125th anniversary of the Rose Parade and the 100th Rose Bowl Game.
- New Year’s Day represents a fresh start for each person, and the theme reminds us of the optimism we can and should bring forth in our lives and actions.
- We can attain the seemingly unattainable through focus, effort and the belief in the probability of success.
- Believing in the power of our dreams allows us to achieve what might seem impossible.
- Dreams come in all sizes, and regardless of size, dreams fuel the stores of our lives.
- The imagery of fantasy, sports, family, adventure, art, education and community, or the celebration of events that have had and are still having global impact can all be expressed through the prism of Dreams…
The self-builders have links to entry forms on their websites. Download the forms and read them carefully. Each builder has a different deadline and requirements for submissions. While you’re on the site, be sure to check out past floats the organization has entered in the Rose Parade. This will give an idea of the kinds of floats they like and keep you from repeating recent design concepts.

- La Canada Flintridge Tournament of Roses Association, Animation Trophy for “Dino-Soar”
- Sierra Madre Rose Float Association, Isabella Coleman Trophy for “The Sky’s the Limit”
- South Pasadena Tournament of Roses, Founders' Trophy for “Sailing the Sea of Knowledge”
