I confess I am not a big football fan—give me a bat and mitt any day—but this is the Tournament of Roses column and the Rose Bowl Game is part of the Tournament, so here’s the official score: Stanford beat Wisconsin on Jan. 1 , 2013, with a score that reads like next year’s date.
As a native Californian, I like to see the Granddaddy of Them All go to a Pac-12 team, but the Wisconsin Badgers have a pretty shabby record. They lost five of their season games, and half of their Big Ten games. 2013 is their Rose Bowl Game three-peat: three games in a row, three losses in a row.
The Stanford Cardinal went 12-2 for the season and 8-1 in the Pac-12, a reputable record to bring to the Rose Bowl. Stanford also has a crazier band than Wisconsin. Not as big, not as disciplined, but oh, so much fun with their painted Sousaphones, chaotic cornering, and costumed drum major.
Rose Bowl Game tickets are rarer than a gold strike in Pasadena, so I didn’t go to the game, but how I would have liked to see that half-time show!
The theme of the 124th Rose Parade and 99th Rose Bowl Game is “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” The Tournament of Roses is a celebration that lasts several weeks in the fall and winter, with the high points being the Rose Parade presented by Honda and the Rose Bowl Game presented by VIZIO on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013.
