Roots run deep in Maplewood antique shop

In historic Maplewood, the renovated Moose Hall was converted to a charming antique shop. Nancy Kassabaum, Penny Dreyer and Patti Brightfield, three sisters, opened this privately owned store in April 2006. At Roots, shoppers find antique and salvaged furniture, tools, architectural pieces, alphabetic letters and more.

An appropriate name for an antique store, Roots carries a deep meaning with its location and familial ownership. The historic building is fascinating with original parts such as its ornate ceiling. Inside, there are many interesting pieces for sale. It is obvious that the three sisters devote time and energy to choosing the right merchandise and caring for this shop.

The sisters began with a rented booth at an antique mall. However, they outgrew their space and were constantly reorganizing the display. They moved into a small store in Maplewood and have since expanded to a slightly larger part of the building.

Describing the reason for the store, the youngest sister, Penny Dreyer says, “ We just have a love for it.”

Many people, impressed by the store’s design, have asked the women to visit their houses to decorate. They do not accept these offers because none of the three have degrees in design. Additionally, their attention is directed to their true love of collecting and selling antiques.

The women divide daily work into two-hour shifts. The store hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The store is closed on Sunday and Monday so that the three may shop together for the store.

Occasionally people approach them about purchasing items to sell in the store. If the women are interested in these items, they require that transactions occur at noon or 2 p.m. while two owners are simultaneously there.

Jess Lorentzen and her friend saw a print advertisement for the store and visited during a girls-day out shopping at different boutiques.

Lorentzen says, “This is by far one of the cutest stores. It is off the beaten path, but will become a regular place for us to visit.”

The store is located at 3104 Sutton Boulevard, a few blocks away from the busy Manchester Road intersection. Located in Maplewood, the owners enjoy the many events the town hosts each year. Dreyer says that it helps their business and makes the community feel connected.
