It's official: Sony Pictures announced today that actress Rooney Mara will play pint-sized hacker Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's adaptation of Stieg Larsson's novel The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

EW.com's Hollywood Insider reports that Mara will join Daniel Craig (as fallen journalist Mikael Blomkvist) and Robin Wright (as Millenium magazine editor Erika Berger) for this film, as well as the two sequels that complete Larsson's Millenium trilogy: The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo will begin shooting next month in Sweden, for a worldwide release on December 20, 2011.

Rooney's acting credits include Youth in Revolt as well as Fincher's upcoming The Social Network.

All three of Larsson's Millenium trilogy have already been adapted into films in Sweden, which are being released stateside by Chicago's Music Box Films.  Currently, The Girl Who Played With Fire is showing at the Music Box Theatre (3733 N. Southport Ave.).
