Oscar-nominee Rooney Mara has taken the lead role in Steven Soderbergh's Side Effects.
Written by Scott Z. Burns (The Informant!), Side Effects will star Mara as Emily Hawkins, a young woman whose fear of her violent husband leads her to become addicted to prescription drugs after learning that he is about to be released from prison. Gossip Girl's Blake Lively was originally set for the role, but left the project for unknown reasons.
Mara recently earned an Oscar nomination for her critically acclaimed role as Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. She will soon begin production on the Terrence Malick drama Lawless.
Side Effects also stars Jude Law, Channing Tatum, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Filming begins in April.
