Rooms with a View: Enjoy the Vistas and Afternoon Tea at The Mandarin Oriental New York

Now that the dog days of winter are really upon us, New Yorkers and those visiting the city find innovative ways to entertain themselves during the coldest days of the year. You could go ice skating or take a trip to the top of the Empire State Building but you'd have to bundle up. Why not enjoy a cozy New York tradition by having tea at the Mandarin Oriental New York?

Situated on Columbus Circle and 60th Street, the 248-room Mandarin Oriental is modern without being too chichi. Rooms are lavishly appointed, with Asian artifacts and Eastern influences throughout. If you've ever stayed at a Mandarin Oriental (the hotel chain is in 25 countries), you know what I mean. The style is uniform throughout the properties, with modern amenities and great vistas. The views of Central Park and the Hudson River at the Mandarin Oriental New York are awe-inspiring. Guests can relax at its world-renowned spa, with some of the most beautiful and tranquil treatment rooms in the city. Trust me, I know. As the expert massage therapist kneaded my aching back, I felt as if I had been transported to a Balinese villa, complete with personal attendants. I usually feel relaxed at spas but I never have an out-of-body experience like I did at the Mandarin Oriental.

But the thing I love most about the Mandarin Oriental is its afternoon tea service. From 2:30 p.m. until 4 every day in the Lobby Lounge, guests can choose from a wide array of tasty treats and specially flavored teas. Now, you may be wondering, I can buy that stuff and make it at home. Yes, you could, but would you have as fabulous a time? Probably not. Why not splurge when friends are in from out of town? You can reminisce over a pot of custom-made Darjeeling and scones with homemade marmalade as you look down on Central Park. The English have their tea time. Why not make this an American tradition as well?
