While Jem, a one-year-old Australian cattle dog mix, spent her days alone on an apartment balcony, deprived of food and water, her owners went about their life, apparently oblivious to her suffering.
According to Saturday's KRQE News, someone finally noticed Jem alone on that balcony and contacted the Albuquerque, N.M., animal control.
Thankfully, the report of a neglected dog was made before the lack of food and water took Jem's life.
Barbara Bruin, with the city's animal welfare department, expressed her feelings on the case to KRQE News:
"It's the utter lack of feeling to treat any living being that way,"
"It's just unbelievable."
Jem weighs half of what she should at just 23 pounds. Her frail body and painfully evident bones reveal that she has been deprived of the basic necessities for life for too long.
Undoubtedly, Jem suffered from her days of being secluded and forgotten - suffering beyond the hunger that tore at her stomach with every passing minute.
Animal welfare officials plan to charge the three roommates who locked her out on the apartment balcony with animal cruelty.
