Room Report: Protea Hotel Transit O.R. Tambo Airport Johannesburg

Arrival Experience: This hotel is only available to those that already find themselves in the international departures area, after passport control. It is meant for passengers connecting in Johannesburg to an international flight. Proper signage guides travelers directly to the elevator that leads to the modern lobby and reception area located in a quiet space above the terminal building itself. Staffers are available at all hours, which is important considering that travelers may arrive at odd hours.

Dining: There is no restaurant here, but most guests are simply looking for a quiet and comfortable place to sleep. If hunger pangs call, it is just a short walk (and elevator ride) down to the departures level where numerous dining and shopping outlets await.

Accommodations: Undoubtedly the star of the show here, these are some of the airport area's smartest rooms. Being connected to the airport is a strong suit, but the friendly staff make the experience even better. Rooms feature modern hardwood or tiled floors, oversized beds with thick duvets and soft pillows, and work desks boasting free wireless Internet access. Sofas or armchairs provide a place to lounge or reorganize luggage for those mid-journey. Flat-screen cable TVs are ideal for those that have the time to catch up on the news or their favorite shows. Laptop-sized safes and spacious closets are helpful, but most guests surely make a beeline directly for the bed. Bathrooms are bright and attractive with a host of toiletries including toothbrush and shaving sets, a stash of eco-friendly toiletries and sewing kits, all of which prove helpful for travelers.

Conclusion: Flight information screens and a separate business center are both important features for an airport hotel. Unfortunately, there is no fitness center here, but it appears that most guests rarely request one. Views are mostly of the airport's rooftop with no plane activity (or engine noise) detectable. This comfortable hotel features the reliability that comes from the Protea brand (recently added to the global Marriott Hotels and Resorts portfolio). Rooms can be booked for the night or on an hourly basis. It features the design touches that modern travelers will appreciate and all of the important business amenities that jetsetters want during a short stay.
