Arrival Experience: It does not get any closer than this. The Marriott is the only hotel located on Newark airport grounds, and while not connected to the airport, it is walkable for those without luggage and willing to cross a busy street. This is also the only airport hotel that has a convenient shuttle that goes to all terminals. All other hotels pick up and drop off passengers at a more distant location necessitating the need to take a train to the terminals. Once inside the beautiful lobby, guests immediately notice a flickering, modern fireplace and numerous seating areas. Individual reception desks make the check-in process more personable, and the staff seems to take a page from Ritz-Carlton offering both friendly and impressive service (oft unexpected at an airport hotel).
Dining: The hotel's restaurant is aptly named the Aviation Grill and focuses on continental cuisine for three meals a day. An impressive breakfast buffet offers a wide range of fresh fruits and egg dishes, but it is the lunch and dinner menus that surprise with tasty, homemade fare. The Greatroom lounge and bar serves three all-day bites, crafty cocktails, beer, wine, and hot drinks including Starbucks coffee. The lobby area is often abuzz with guests using their laptops and sipping a drink or chatting with friends.
Accommodations: Boasting Marriott's new design concept, guest rooms feature Revive bedding with pillowtop mattresses, thick duvets, and five pillows of various sizes and firmness. Following my 12-hour flight, sinking into the Marriott bed was nothing short of dreamy. There are power outlets on the desk and either side of the bed, which is a brilliant move on the designers' part catering to over-connected travelers. Spacious work desks have phones with voice mail, coffeemakers, wireless high speed Internet, and cushioned desk chairs that swivel. Facing the bed is a flat-screen cable TV sitting atop an armoire containing the safe. Guests can book concierge level rooms for added benefits like robes and access to a club lounge for free breakfast and evening snacks. Rooms facing the airport offer the most entertainment with nearly constant runway action. Soundproofing is excellent with no sound seeping in from outside.
Conclusion: This is the go-to hotel for convenience at Newark airport. No need to take a train and shuttle to get to the hotel. The airport shuttle swings by all terminals 24 hours per day on a constant basis. Once at the hotel, travelers can break a sweat in the fitness center or swim laps in the combination indoor-outdoor swimming pool. A business center allows guests to print boarding passes for flights while a gift shop restocks travelers with forgotten essentials. Meeting space is another draw here with the largest ballroom hosting as many as 700 for receptions. Airplane buffs will love the airport views, and the convenience of this property is unbeatable.
