Room Report: Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Gurgaon-New Delhi, India

Doubletree by Hilton Gurgaon

Arrival Experience: Since many flights from Europe and North America arrive just after midnight, the airport is abuzz with traffic so it was a pleasant experience to have the Doubletree by Hilton Gurgaon hotel's car meet me after baggage claim and help me zip right to the hotel. Strong security meets all cars at the hotel's front gate, and guests are quickly stepping into the lobby with the assistance of friendly staffers who immediately offer Doubletree's signature warm chocolate chip cookie. Pop music plays overhead, and glossy marble and tile reflect the numerous gold leaf and glass sculptures throughout the public areas. Reception speaks English perfectly and processes arrivals in a jiffy.

Dining: It was tough not to be lured into The Food Store, the 24/7 deli and coffee shop off the lobby with its impressive pastries, sandwiches, and inviting atmosphere. Hunger pangs come quickly for jetlagged guests, and Asia Alive is the perfect antidote. Serving three meals a day, it begins with an impressive breakfast buffet laid out in appealing fashion. Diners float from station to station watching chefs prepare their meals from scratch including an omelet station, quiche area, fresh fruit table, Indian corner, and live crepe section. Off in another section, a variety of fresh juices are dispensed from tall glass cylinders offering everything from traditional orange juice to a delicious watermelon juice. Lunchtime is a quick transition for the chef, and each station dishes up various Asian dishes including a dim sum corner, tandoor oven producing local barbecued delicacies, a noodle and soup island, and, a favorite of all guests, the teppanyaki ice cream station making concoctions to order on the chilled table a la Coldstone Creamery-style. Dinner produces similar excitement offering more fusion flavors including Thai, Malay, and Indonesian among others. Tipplers head for Spiritual to sip shaken cocktails or Indian beers to the tunes of a DJ. Famous for its brick-oven pizzas, it is easy to enjoy a quick bite here. Try the chef's special dessert pizza! Outside the front door, the hotel boasts the only full-fledged Moroccan restaurant in the city, Casablanca. Delightful tagines and exotic flavors are prepared by the Moroccan expat chef who dedicates his time solely to the eatery, which is extremely popular with locals.

Accommodations: Guest rooms still appear fresh despite the hotel being open for more than a year. Soft carpeting, large beds with soft and firm pillows, and spacious glass work desks with wireless and wired high speed Internet are exactly what a business traveler wants after a long flight. Flat-screen cable TVs produce plentiful diversion, and those awake in the wee hours of the morning can use the adjustable desk lamp to keep from disturbing someone else in the room. Speaker phones, individual bedside reading lights, full-length mirrors, slippers, and swiveling desk chairs are additional perks. Bathrooms are bright and fresh with Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries, powerful glass showers, and soft towels. The top two floors are reserved for club level guests who enjoy additional perks including access to a private bi-level lounge with outdoor terrace. Breakfast and evening snacks and cocktails are served here with exceptional service. All rooms benefit from complimentary bottled water as is common at high-end Indian hotels.

Conclusion: A full business center with ample meeting space proves that this is a business hotel. Especially notable is the separation of meeting space around the property to insure that noise from one group does not disturb another. There is even a full meeting room underneath the Moroccan restaurant allowing for easy flow between work and a nice dinner. Public areas of the hotel boast free wireless Internet access. Working out in the gym, soaking in the steam room, or lounging by the outdoor pool are all great ways to decompress. As one of the first Doubletree properties in India, this hotel wins out for its location convenient to many business and corporate offices in Gurgaon without having to sludge through Delhi's notorious city center traffic. With a staff intent on insuring every guest is happy, this property is one of the Hilton family's best in the region.
