Over time, we all collect "stuff". When the "stuff" overpowers life, it is time to get organized!
Begin today, and take small steps each day, to organize your life, room by room! The rule we will use to clean out and organize: If you have not used an item in the past year, you do not need it!
Make believe you are moving to another home, and you have just 60 days to pack up and have the house ready to sell.
Each day, set a timer for 20-30 minutes. Only work for the 20 minutes. Don't burn yourself out trying to do too much in one day.
Choose a room, and go through every drawer, closet, cupboard. Take as many days as you need, to complete a room. You will have three boxes. SAVE, RECYCLE, TOSS. Save only what you need. Do not attach emotions to items. If you must save an item that is not useful, decide if you could photograph the item, to save the memory on a cd, or thumb drive.
As you do this for every room in your home, you will begin to enjoy the freedom from clutter! It is amazing how this feels. Have every member of the family help with the process.
If you come to items that you just can't put into one of the three boxes, set it aside for the day, and move on to other items that you can handle. Don't let yourself get bogged down in memories. You have just a half hour to work in a room, each session. Even if you want to work longer, don't.
You have other important things to do today! Do not burn yourself out doing too much in one session. If you do, the system will collapse, and you will not be organized in the long run. You will be frustrated, and overwhelmed. That is not what the goal is! The goal is to take small steps, and work toward simplicity, organization, and freedom from "stuff!" After cleaning out each room, you will find that you have plenty of space for your needed items. Utilizing storage bins, baskets, and other small containers, you can stay organized. Because you are now organized, you will have more time for fun, more energy to use on life rather than cleaning, and more money due to the fact that you will be able to find things you need, and won't have to buy more of the same items!
