Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood has been named Music Radio Personality of the Year at the 2011 Sony Radio Academy Awards, which were presented May 9, 2011, at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. Wood attended the ceremony with his girlfriend Ana Araujo.
As previously reported, Wood had been nominated for DAB Rising Star and Music Radio Personality of the Year for "The Ronnie Wood Show."
BBC radio host Robbie Savage received the DAB Rising Star prize, which is the only category for the awards that is voted on by the general public. The rest of the Sony Radio Academy Award categories are voted on by U.K. radio professionals.
Wood's radio show debuted in 2010 on Absolute Radio's Absolute Classic Rock channel. The program can be heard Mondays through Thursdays at 4 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time, and on Fridays at 8 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time. Repeats of the show air on the main Absolute Radio channel on Saturdays at 10 p.m. Greenwich Mean Time.
Wood received praised by the Sony Radio Academy judges for being an "amazing character" with a "really innovative program ... Ronnie has lived the life of a thousand men and you feel like a child sitting at his feet as he unfolds his rarefied story book and recounts his great adventures. His use of his guitar and harmonica to introduce the varied music and stories make this a unique and award winning show."
As previously reported, "The Ronnie Wood Show" recently launched two podcasts: one podcast has stories of Wood's time with the Rolling Stones, and the other podcast has highlights from "The Ronnie Wood Show."
In other news about Wood (who is an accomplished painter and illustrator), some of his original art work is now on display at Number Nine the Gallery in Birmingham, England.
